On Thursday, Quyon residents said goodbye to a local landmark as the old Quyon Lion’s Hall was torn down to make way for the highly anticipated Quyon Community Centre.
Affectionately dubbed “the Beach Barn”, the old hall was a former military storage building that was acquired by the local Lions Club in the early 70s. Though the Lions did an admirable job keeping the hall operational, a replacement has been long overdue.
The $1.5 million contract for the demolition and construction was given to LCC & Associés Canada Inc. at a special meeting of the Municipality of Pontiac’s council on Aug. 29.
“There’s two contracts, one for the architect who did the plans and he’ll be managing every step of the construction. He subcontracted the engineers for all the different electrical, heat and ventilation,” explained the municipality’s Director General, Benedikt Kuhn. “Then there’s LCC who are responsible for constructing the new community centre, but the demolition of the old one was part of that contract.”
“If there’s one company doing it, there’s less downtime between the demolition and construction … it just streamlines the whole process,” he added.
Architect Pierre Tabet designed the new 7,000 sq. ft. building, which will be able to hold over 200 people.
Kuhn said that work on the new building is scheduled to begin this fall.
A public consultation on the revitalization of the Quyon Recreation Park, located adjacent to the new building, was scheduled to be held on Oct. 28 but was postponed until after the municipal elections.
