Dear Editor
Recently, it has come to my attention that the Pontiac has one of the worst states of health in the Outaouais and . . .
therefore in the province of Quebec. I learned this through a communication from the CISSSO. In particular they stressed a lower life expectancy, respiratory and circulatory problems, heart disease, cancer and diabetes.
Much has been said about closures and lack of staff at the Shawville Hospital. This is a serious issue and it is my hope that we will see solutions in 2020. There is talk about bringing back local management and positive steps being taken to address the conditions of nursing in the Pontiac.
Our health care and support of staff in the CLSC’s and the hospital is vitally important for the well-being of those working there, and the population that they are serving.
But we can reduce the need for these medical services. There needs to be a focus on preventative measures.
I have lived in the Pontiac since 2012 and many people have said to me that there is no place to exercise. It is a proven fact that with exercise comes a focus on better eating habits and these are two important factors in boosting overall health.
The CISSSO also have stated that the new Wellness Centre for the Pontiac (with pool and gym) is vitally important now to improve our current health situation. In my opinion there is no better time for this facility. There is nothing more important than our health. If we do not have it — we have nothing. To revitalize the Pontiac, to improve our economy, to have a workforce — we need to be healthy.
