On June 8, around 50 Pontiac residents gathered at Mickey Creek Golf Club in Vinton to take part in the Bryson R.A.’s fourth annual golf tournament.

Organized by Bryson R.A. members Wanda Lance Griffin and Shelley Normandeau, the event served as an opportunity to raise money for the R.A. while having fun with friends on the golf course.

With 12 teams competing, the tournament consisted of a nine-hole, four-man best ball capped off with a spaghetti and garlic bread supper.

According to the event’s main organizer Wanda Lance Griffin, the tournament is a great event for the community as it brings people together while supporting local businesses like the Mickey Creek Golf Club.

“It gets everybody out and it’s businesses helping businesses basically, she said. “We’re not a business. We’re an organization trying to raise money yet helping our local community.”

According to the golf club’s owner Jeff Presley, the tournament is one of the biggest event’s the club hosts all year. As a Bryson resident, he’s thrilled to be able to raise funds for the town’s R.A.

“We’ve been coaches in hockey and ball and all that stuff for the R.A,” he said. “We’re big supporters of them and they’re big supporters of us.”

With the same faces coming out year after year since the tournament’s inception, Lance is grateful for the consistent attendance from local residents.

“It’s nice that the people come out and actually support us,” she said.

The tournament ended with a two-way tie and the winner had to be settled with a putting contest.

With no one able to sink their puts, the tie-breaker was turned into a game of rock paper scissors battle and when it all came down to it, the winning team was Team Scum, consisting of Brandon Presley, Travis Dubeau, Thomas Dubeau and Jeff Hannaberry, who all received $50 gift cards from Ultramar.

All the money raised from the event will go back to the R.A. to expenses to the town’s new hockey rink,” Lance Griffin said.

Team Scum member Travis Dubeau sets up for a long put on the sixth hole.
