The Shawville Figure Skating Club held its annual Christmas show at the Shawville arena on Saturday morning, featuring over 100 skaters across more than a dozen performances.
This year’s theme was “Christmas Around the World,” featuring performances inspired by traditions from the United Kingdom, France, Denmark, China and more.
President Shelley Heaphy said the coaches got together to choose a theme, and got to work devising routines based on international Christmases.
“They wanted to represent different countries. They researched different songs, and they had big ideas for costumes for each country. And they ran with it [ . . . ] they cut all the music, they choreographed,” she said.
Heaphy added that some small groups of skaters were even able to have some input into their performances, with supervision from their coaches.
“The groups really had the opportunity to do the kind of number they wanted to do.”
Heaphy said the club is happy to have maintained around 100 skaters registered for the past few seasons, and this year will send about 20 skaters to a regional competition in Gatineau – the most the club has ever sent.
The new year will be full of action from the club’s skaters, with competitions in Masson and Vaudreuil-Dorion on the horizon. The club’s final show of the season will be on Mar. 20 at 7 p.m. at the Shawville arena. The show’s theme will be announced in the near future.
As for Saturday’s show, Heaphy said she was happy to see so many people in the crowd to support the skaters.
“I think all the skaters skated beautifully. I appreciate all the hours of work that go into it from the coaching side [ . . . ] and the executive for taking their ideas and making sure they happen.”
