Recipients and volunteers gathered at the Pontiac Legion in Campbell’s Bay for a cheque ceremony this past Wednesday.
The Legion announced it would be donating $8,200 to be shared between retirement homes, veterans support groups, mental health services and cemeteries in the region. Recipients of funds include the Residence Meilleur du Haut Pontiac, Les Amis du Manoir St. Joseph, Gatineau Valley Retirement Village, Maison Mont-Blanc, Autonhomme Pontic, Centre Intervalle, Champlain Royal Canadian Cadets, Veteran Ron Woodstock, St. Matthew Anglican Cemetery, Wesley United Cemetery, Old Clarendon Cemetery and St. George’s Anglican Cemetery.
The donated funds were raised through the annual Poppy Campaign, and represents the fundraising work the Legion’s volunteers do throughout the year.
Pontiac Legion President Ron Woodstock said that the donated money is a tangible example of the invaluable community work the Legion does in the Pontiac and cautioned that if the Pontiac Legion were to close, the region would lose much of the funding raised through the Poppy Campaign.
“This is why we need the Poppy Campaign,” Woodstock said. “If the Pontiac Legion were to close, the money that is being donated here today would simply not be accessible.”
Pontiac Legion Secretary Mona Woodstock explained that in addition to supporting the Legion through the Poppy Campaign, community members can volunteer and become members.
