The Area Parish of Renfrew-Pontiac is currently holding a winter clothing drive, collecting gently used items for those in need across their region.
From Oct. 12-31, the parish has designated eight locations for folks looking to cleanse their home of unused or outgrown clothing to drop off, with all items to be made free-of-charge to the public shortly after the collection period.
“In all of our communities, there are people who need help from time to time,” said Rev. Susan Lewis, of organizing the drive. “If it’s here and you need something, it’s there to take.”
The parish is accepting donations of any clothing items that will help keep families warm, such as winter jackets and boots through to mitts and toques, except for underwear.
In Shawville, there are three drop-off locations: Stedman’s, Giant Tiger, and the porch of 137 Rectory Road. In Danford Lake, donations are accepted at Bethany Hall on Wednesdays, from 6:30 p.m. till nine, or at Holy Trinity Anglican Church on Sundays, from 9:30 a.m. through noon.
The other drop-off locations are found in Renfrew.
Lewis stressed that there is no catch to accepting an item from the collection. Everyone in the community is welcome to browse and take as they need it.
“It’s not just for church members, and it serves the whole family,” she explained.
Whereas charities like the Snowsuit Fund help local children, this drive will be able to benefit parents, too.
“It’s hard for [parents] to get out and be with their children without the necessary clothing,” said Lewis.
Once items have been collected, families can begin to pick up clothing during certain dates and times. On Oct. 27, those closest to Shawville can pick up items at St. Paul’s Anglican Church from 10:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.
After that, items will be available in Renfrew on Nov. 10, before items are available in Danford Lake at Bethany Hall on Nov. 17, during the same time period.
Any leftover items will be donated to local women’s shelters and other organizations in need.
