Shawville chip truck Wings ‘n’ Things wrapped up the season in a big way Monday, donating all the proceeds from its sales that day to the Shawville-Clarendon Fire Department.
“When I bought it, we talked about how I was going to choose a different organization every year,” said the chip stand’s owner Sheryl Greer. “Because there is a lot of need. And my nephew is on the fire department so I thought it was a good cause.”
Delaney Murdock and Patricia Egan were also helping out run the chip stand by taking orders and payments. Both girls volunteered their time so that more proceeds could go to the fire department.
Cathy Watson, who organizes the antique cars that stop by on Thursdays, organized baked goods and coffee, also for donation.
“We’ve had a lot of people donating,” Watson said. “They’re going to be bringing baked goods all day long.”
The act of generosity closed owner Sheryl Greer’s first season at the helm of the local business. She bought Wings ‘n’ Things this past spring, and opened it for the season over the May long weekend. Since then, she’s either been working at the chip stand or at her regular job at Service Quebec.
“This is my retirement, this is the plan,” Greer said. “The former owner decided he was selling and he came to me because I helped him out in my spare time. He knew that it was my dream.”
Greer said she’s only taken one day off since opening the chip stand. Wings ‘n’ Things was open all summer from the May long weekend until the weekend of the Shawville Fair. After that, they went back to just being open on weekends. Monday, Oct. 14, was the last day of the season.
Next year, Greer plans to work for six months with Service Quebec and six months with the chip stand before retiring and focusing on Wings ‘n’ Things.
