On the long weekend, Sharon Crawford and I went to visit my cousin, Bob Mayhew at his camp in Lindsay Ont. We took Sharon’s new pup, Luna with us and she did the trip very well. We stopped a few times to give Luna a run and stretch our own legs.
We decided to leave Thursday to beat the heavy weekend traffic. We didn’t get very far before we saw our first accident at the gas station just past the Chenaux dam. It looked horrendous with three vehicles involved. How they didn’t take out those gas pumps was just a sheer miracle.
Then the rest of our trip was uneventful. The traffic was a little heavy with campers as we took the scenic route heading towards Bancroft. We arrived at 6 p.m. and met Bob at the gate.
He was so happy to see us because we were his first visitors all summer. His fiancée Rachel has been gone for three months to Alberta to take care of her daughter, Tiffany who has been dealing with very serious health issues. Tiffany was pregnant with her first baby when she was diagnosed with cancer. The baby was born prematurely weighing 2.5 lbs. but is doing fine now. Tiffany has to have surgery next week and undergo treatment for her cancer. They are hoping that both mother and daughter will be out of hospital by end of September.
Sometimes I think my life is tough but then I see or hear about other people’s problems and start counting my blessings. We are living in crazy times and people are confused and scared about the future. There is so much depression and anxiety and we all have to support each other and be more understanding and sympathetic.
I have been busy cleaning out the garden and getting the flower beds ready for winter. Yes, I said winter. As much as we hate to see it come, come it will and we should be prepared.
I made beet pickles, corn relish, salsa and green tomato pickles. I also did a few jars of dills, dilled carrots and hot beans. I did well for someone who wasn’t even supposed to plant a garden.
Every fall I tell myself that I’m not going to plant a garden next year because it’s too much work but when the snow melts and reveals the garden ground I get the fever again. I just love watching everything grow. It’s like having children except a lot quieter. It is relaxing and rewarding not to mention the money you save in food. You can easily eat out of your garden for two months and preserve and freeze the extra.
It’s going to be an interesting election. Lots of debates and points of views. I voted on the weekend to avoid the crowds. I voted at the Lions Club Hall and it was very organized and quick. It didn’t take me more than two minutes in and out. Thank you to all the workers for your time.
I heard yesterday that one of our local restaurants will be closed for eat-in service due to the fact that they can’t get people to work. Restaurants, hotels and motels are all experiencing the same problem all over. The service industry as we knew it is changing. The next thing you know when we go into a motel to get a room they’ll be handing us fresh sheets and cleaning supplies.
