Construction is well underway on the new municipal garage in Ladysmith, with work estimated to be complete by the end of October.
Mayor Karen Daly Kelly explained that the 410 sq. m. building will house six vehicles from both the municipal road crew as well as the Thorne Fire Department.

“We needed a municipal garage because our [staff] were working under adverse conditions,” she said. “The same thing applies for the fire trucks … They need a place where they can take them in and work in better conditions.”
Kelly said the cost of the building is approximately $704,000, with $494,000 coming from a municipal grant and the rest from a line of credit. Entreprise Ma-Mi Inc. out of Maniwaki was awarded the construction contract and broke ground in mid-May.
Kelly said that she was glad the project was finally underway, as it had been a longstanding concern of the local council.
“It feels fantastic,” she said. “Safety is a big issue.”
