Over the May-long weekend, officers with La Sureté du Québec increased their patrolling in the province asking residents to be mindful of road safety with the expectation of a higher than normal volume of traffic, during that time.
According to a press release issued on May 16, officers focused mostly on a variety of behaviours that contribute to collisions on the road, including speeding, impaired and distracted driving.
During the same period last year, officers recorded four fatal accidents, 143 collisions resulting in injuries and 64 cases of driving under the influence of drugs, alcohol or both, according to SQ spokesperson Sgt. Marc Tessier.
According to another press release issued on May 22, officers revealed only one deadly incident on the road and 88 collisions causing injuries, last weekend – nearly a 40 per cent drop in both categories for this year.
With 400 road safety checkpoints throughout the province, officers also arrested 84 people for impaired driving which accounts for 20 more than last year.
Despite the mostly positive results from the report, police emphasized the importance of driving safely and responsibly in order to keep the number of road-related deaths and injuries to a minimum.
