Our condolences and deepest sympathies go out to the families of Leona Ouellette (née Darcy) who passed away suddenly on Jan. 11, at the age of 78. She was born in Sheenboro, Que., into a large and loving, musically gifted, Irish Catholic family. She remained a devout Catholic and an avid volunteer, notably at the Ottawa Grace Manor, until her passing. All who knew her will miss her love of family and friends, her Irish sense of humour and . . .
her willing spirit. The remaining siblings, Cecil and Mary, recently lost their brother Dominic D’Arcy. A memorial and burial will be announced at a later date.
Birthday greetings and best wishes go out to Carmelita Sullivan Ouellette on Jan. 20, to Jean Smith on Jan. 23, to Gilbert Walker on Jan. 22, to Terry Picard on Jan. 23 and to Kerry Tallon and Doris McCann on Jan. 24.
A virtual Celebration of Life was held in honour of David Prentice of Sheenboro. On Jan. 16 friends and colleagues from both sides of the Canada/United States border shared interesting tributes about his life.
Fredi Hungate, a lifelong friend, recited the beautiful poem “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost. In her eulogy, Fredi Hungate described David as a genuine quirky character who was blessed with a razor-sharp intellect, irrepressible humour, and an opinionated tongue.
Bill Cowles, an Island cottager at Fort William, Quebec, traced the connection of his and David’s family coming to the area in the late 1800s. He also spoke of the Old Fort William Cottage Association (OFWCA) which David created to keep all cottage owners updated.
Andrew Perrault, a retired history teacher who has not lost his touch in interestingly providing historical details related to this area, shared part of David’s family tree and the Perrault connection. He spoke of their time spent on Sheen Council together and his role as the lead councillor for identifying the roads in Sheenboro. He spoke of a generational bond of friendship and caring. As a result of the COVID pandemic, the planned dinners with lengthy discussions over a glass of wine were cancelled but on Dec. 24 David knocked on Andrew’s door and presented him with a nice mug full of treats, wished him season’s greetings and was off.
Memories of David will live on forever in Sheenboro. Malin’s Point will always be a special connection to David for his Sheen friends and neighbours.
Enjoy the sunshine today and keep safe.
