Lions from all about filled the Shawville Curling Club on Saturday, with the hometown group taking advantage of the Annual Governor’s Bonspiel to prove their might on the ice, winning their second year in a row.
Hosting teams from as far as Morrisburg, Ont., the Shawville Lions Club saw 12 teams tossing rocks all day long, participating in a tournament that started in 1974.
Shawville Lions President James Howard explained that because they had won the 2017 edition, held in Morrisburg, they had the responsibility to plan and host the next one. Member Dalton Cluff stepped up to take the reins organizing and had seen 12 teams of Lions signed up for the tourney.

“I told him it’s not going to be as simple as that,” said Howard, speaking to the crowd of the tournament coming together.
Then, Mother Nature decided to rear her ugly head, as the season’s first dump of snow arrived and with it came a few cancellations. Luckily for all who enjoyed themselves Saturday, many local curlers joined in to fill out the numbers so that it could proceed as planned. Howard and Cluff expressed their thanks to these teams, especially the group of Quyon Lions, whose four players filled the shoes of twice their numbers when the second Quyon team couldn’t make it.
When all was said and done, one of the Shawville teams had claimed the top spot once again.
“We usually have the winning team present, but it’s kind of hard when neither Morrisburg or Quyon won,” said Howard.
Howard, Cluff, Dave Cummings, and Tom Fahey were the day’s champs, claiming the trophy for Shawville two years running. Second place was held by the first Morrisburg team and third went to Quyon.
The annual tournament was resurrected in 2017 following a hiatus of roughly 10 years. It acts as a great way for different clubs to get together, said Howard, as it helps to build fellowship and bridge the gap between regions.
