It was with great sadness that we learned of the passing of my beloved aunt Mona MacKechnie last Thursday, Feb. 27. Aunt Mona was a leader in this community for many years, working hard for her town as a member of the Quyon Lionettes, Quyon United Church, and so many other organizations that she was involved in. Her heart was always in Quyon, and she wanted to see this village thrive. She was the life of the party, and I just hope that heaven has red c’boys, kazoos, and lots of singing and yodeling. She has always been an inspiration to me, and I will miss her very much. Our thoughts and prayers are with Donna, Dale, Chris, and all of her family and friends as we grieve her loss.

The Quyon Lions Club hosted their annual curling bonspiel on Saturday. I was unable to attend this year, but I hear everyone had a great time, both on and off the ice. Kudos to all who participated, making this a terrific fundraising event for the Lions.

Also on Saturday, a party was held at the Quyon Legion in honour of Bernice Draper-Hickey. Not only will Bernice be turning 55 on Mar. 10, but she will also soon be retiring. We know Bernice will keep busy in her retirement, though, as she has three new grand-babies on the way. So much to celebrate. Cheers to you, Bernice.

Happy birthday to Brooks Curley, as he celebrates on Mar. 5. Along with Bernice and her twin sister Beverley celebrating on Mar. 10, we have birthday wishes going out to Hollie Leach, Bill Young, and Mackenzie Barr on the same day as well. Best wishes to all who are celebrating special occasions this week.

St. Paddy’s Day fun will be kicking off in Quyon this week, with the big Gavan’s party being held this coming Sunday, Mar. 9. Get out your green and join Gail Gavan as she will be hosting the festivities, which include music from Louis Schryer, The Ryans, Lorne Daley, Virginia Schwartz & friends, and so much more.

The following weekend, the fun will continue with the Quyon Pastoral Charge’s Irish Tea at the Quyon Community Centre on Mar. 15. Also on the 15th, the Quyon Legion will be holding their annual St. Paddy’s Day Kitchen Party, and Gavan’s will be featuring the band Jimmy George that night, with opening act Jessica Pearson & the East Wind. So much St. Pat’s fun in one little town. We can’t wait.
