Deepest sympathy is extended to the family of John Grant, as he passed away on Feb. 18 at the age of 74. Our prayers are with his wife Heather, daughter Shannon and her family, and all of his loved ones as they grieve.

Wasn’t that an exciting finish to the Four Nations Face-Off Tournament last Thursday night? Canada took the big win in OT over Team USA, and there were several watch parties in town with both Gavan’s Hotel and the Quyon Legion offering up specials for attendees who came out to watch the big game. It sure felt good to be Canadian.

This past weekend, rugby teams from Pontiac High School embarked on a trip to Charleston, South Carolina for a rugby tournament. What an amazing experience for these students, including several from Quyon. We hope they are having a terrific time and I can’t wait to hear all about it upon their return.

Birthday wishes are going out to Maeve Fraser, as she celebrates on Feb. 28, and to Maureen McKenny on Mar. 4. Best wishes to all who are celebrating special occasions this week.

I had a call from Idina Parent last week, and she is trying to find the name of the woman from Quyon who gifted her fridge magnets. If you are reading this and you recall giving Mrs. Parent fridge magnets, please contact me and I will put you in touch with her, as she wishes to express her thanks.

Don’t forget that this coming Saturday, Mar. 1st, is the Quyon Lions Club’s annual Curling Bonspiel at the Shawville Curling Club. It is always a great day, whether you are playing or just sitting around enjoying some beverages with friends. I am looking forward to it. The Lions will be then serving up a delicious pancake supper on Mar. 4 at the Quyon Legion to mark Pancake Tuesday. Big thanks to the Lions for hosting these wonderful community events.

As we are quickly approaching the month of March, it’s time to start looking ahead to St. Paddy’s Day celebrations. Gavan’s Hotel will be hosting their big annual St. Pat’s Party on Mar. 9, with Gail Gavan set to host the festivities. Entertainers for the day will include The Ryans, Louis Schryer, Lorne Daley, Virginia Schwartz and friends, the Pauline Brown Dancers, and more. Then on Mar. 15, Gavan’s will be featuring Celtic Rock band Jimmy George live, with Jessica Pearson & the East Wind opening for them. I have been a big fan of Jessica Pearson & the East Wind for several years now, so I am looking forward to this show being right here in Quyon. Gavan’s is the place to be for all of your St. Patrick’s Day shenanigans.

St. Pat’s celebrations will also be held elsewhere in town on Mar. 15, as the Quyon Pastoral Charge will be holding our Irish Tea that day. Please note the new location, at the Quyon Community Centre, and it will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.. Put on your green and join us for tea. That same day, the Quyon Legion will be hosting their annual St. Pat’s Kitchen Party, with the fun starting at 2 p.m.. There is no better place to celebrate the luck of the Irish than in Quyon, QC.
