SHAWVILLE July 20, 2019
On July 20, a crowd of around a dozen people gathered in the stands at Elwood Dale Park in Shawville for some recreational women’s fastball action as the Quyon Flyers hosted the Carp Cubs in a competitive matchup.
With their captain and star pitcher Lynn Kearns finally back in the lineup after giving birth to her son Jack earlier this year, the Flyers looked visibly pumped to get on the diamond and take home the win against their bitter rivals from across the river.
Things started off well as the Flyers flew through the first two innings only allowing a couple of runs and scoring one of their own.
However, at the end of the seven-inning dog fight, it was the Cubs who walked out on top with a convincing 5-2 victory leaving the Flyers knowing that they have plenty of work to do if they want to end the season as champs.
On a positive note, Emma Madigan tacked on a run knocked in by Kearns and first basewoman Hailey Murray picked up the second RBI.
After the loss, Kearns put most of the blame on herself, stating that her pitching was subpar to her standards and that the team didn’t make enough big plays on offense to stay in it.
“Had I not given up five runs that would’ve helped,” she said. “That wasn’t my best performance in pitching compared to what I can do. I gave up too many hits and we didn’t hit the ball as hard as we can. It wasn’t a terrible loss.”
However, having not played in a very long time she was able to shrug it off with a laugh, giving plenty of praise to the defending champs for their quality performance.
“They’re a good team,” she said. “You got to give them some credit too. They pitched well and they hit the ball really well.”
For their next tilt, the Flyers will take on the Stittsville Sixty-Sixers on an undetermined date at the end of the month, Kearns said.
