Carrefour Jeunesse held a Pontiac Summer Job Fair last Wednseday. The event was held both in-person and virtually, with over a dozen employers conducting interviews with 142 job seekers.
The event used the software Remo, which allowed people to log into a waiting room before being invited into a chat room with a potential employer.
The jobs offered were primarily summer jobs to high school and adult ed students.
“We have a lot of really good opportunities . . .
though our goal isn’t to take them out of school. It’s to keep them in school to finish the courses they’re in while they have the opportunity to work,” said Lisa Boisvert, the employee of Carrefour who facilitated the in-person applications at the Pontiac Continuing Education Centre.
Anyone could log on from home, and Carrefour also set up four stations across the Pontiac, with one being at the Pontiac Continuing Education in Shawville, one being at ESSC in Fort-Coulonge, one being at Dr. W Keon School in Chapeau and one being at Carrefour Jeunesse headquarters in Campbell’s Bay.
Prior to the fair, Carrefour held classes to prepare the students for job applications.
“There were classes to do job interview simulations and resume building,” said Boisvert.
She added that even if the applicants weren’t searching for a job, the exercise of applying offered a great opportunity to get the experience of what it would be like for when they eventually do apply.
Some of the hiring organizations included Blue Heron Landscaping, L’EntourElle, Bryson Fencing & Decking, La Jonction Restaurant, CISSS de l’Outaouais, Maison des Jeunes, Danford Lake, Ferme Pure Conscience and artPontiac.
