Around 50 people convened at the Quyon United Church, on Dec. 20, as the Pontiac Community Players (PCP) showed . . .

off their Christmas spirit with a special holiday production.

According to the play’s director Greg Graham, the event was an opportunity for people to share the holiday cheer with the community while raising money for local churches.

Part of a three-night extravaganza, the production in Quyon was followed by performances at the Shawville United Church on Dec. 21 and at St. Andrew’s Knox United Church in Bristol on Dec. 22.

Plus, with Valley Heritage Radio recording one of the play’s dress rehearsals, the performance was also broadcasted on its airwaves on Christmas Day, Greg said.

He explained that the PCP have been putting on radio plays in local churches for the last several years, but that this was the first time that they had brought their act to Quyon.

Adapted by Graham’s niece, Alyssa, from Louisa Alcott’s 1868 novel titled Little Women, the play consisted of a Christmas story depicting the life-stories of four sisters living in 19th Century Massachussets, the different paths they go through and the hardships they face.

“We like the classics and this is a great story,” Greg said.” It’s well-beloved by many men and women, but mostly women love this story. It’s a nice family story that we can share and make people’s Christmas.”

According to Graham, the play’s production began, once the PCP wrapped up their performances of Man of La Mancha at Pontiac High School back in October and that this one included around 20 people to organize.

According to Alyssa, the opportunity to participate in the play’s production was a thrill.

She explained that, while her uncle usually writes the PCP’s plays, she spent a lot of hours working on different productions and even writing plays of her own, during her time at Pontiac High School.

So, when the opportunity came up to adapt a play from one of her favourite books, the 18-year-old couldn’t pass it up for anything and was excited to share her passion with the community.

“I know a bunch of people were asking to do it and I think it’s a really good Christmas story and it translates really well to the stage,” she said. “I feel like it really embodies the Christmas spirit.”

With people filling the seats for the play’s first of three productions, Greg was very thrilled with the community’s response to the event.

“The turnout is fantastic,” he said. “I’m pretty pleased. We could fit a few more in but we’re getting close.”

All the funds raised from the performances will be dedicated to the churches where they took place, Greg said.
