There was gingerbread house fun for all ages at the Centre d’acceuil du Pontiac (CAP) on Saturday afternoon in an activity organized by Connexions Resource Centre and the Parents’ Voice Shawville.
Guests were invited to take graham crackers, icing and candy from the communal table to build their own gingerbread house creations. Volunteers were there to help residents assemble their houses.
Shelley Heaphy, Connexions’ Pontiac community engagement coordinator, said the Parent’s Voice Shawville has organized a gingerbread house-making event for more than 10 years, but this year she wanted to expand the event to include seniors at the CAP.
“I saw a link between our organization, who is able to plan intergenerational events, The Parents’ Voice Shawville, who could then host the event without charging families, and the CAP, who is always willing to host us,” wrote Heaphy in a message.
She said while there were a few families to drop out of the event last-minute, she was pleased with the turnout of all ages.
“Seniors were happy to have help from the youth, and there were youths that absolutely loved the experience of working with a senior,” Heaphy said, adding that she was happy to spread a bit of Christmas cheer as well.
“Everyone left with some gingerbread houses, some had some yummy treats while building, and the smiles were everywhere,” she said.
Parents’ Voice Shawville and Connexions Resource Centre will be teaming up in February for another intergenerational activity. They will host Mad Science, a hands-on science experience, for kids and seniors.
