Eighteen teams teed off at the Pontefract Golf Club on Saturday morning, competing in the seventh iteration of an annual tournament.
Raising over $8,500 for the Mansfield and Pontefract Fire Department, the event organizer was proud to have had another successful year, with a better turnout and lots of support from sponsors.
“Just in donations, we’ve received up $5,800,” said Claudette Pleau, the event organizer. “That’s not counting the day’s participation, like player fees.”
Beyond these donations, Pleau said they received great support from the community in sponsoring extra prizes, the hole-in-one bonus. Mansfield’s Petro T had donated $9,000 in free gas to anyone capable of sinking that shot on hole two.

Pleau was also proud to have the volunteer support of many in the community, as well as the level of participation.
“It’s important that we have the participation of the players and their generosity,” she continued.
The support, she added, was important because the money raised goes right back into helping the community. With new equipment, the firefighters are able to better assist the public, while working on their own or with the other local departments.
While not everyone was able to support the department through a day on the course, there were many more who joined the group for dinner that evening, as over 80 meal tickets had been sold.
At the end of the day, two teams emerged victorious. For the men’s category, the winning team included Joe Morin, Jim Sunstrum, Keith Sloan and Roy Bertrand. For the mixed, the winning team included Pierrette Sirard, Yvon Sirard, Lucette Graveline and Raymond Lévesque.
