Fortin declines run for Liberal leadership

Three notable commitments he has made if he has a voice in government: Push to amend Bill 96 to remove the Notwithstanding Clause which would allow the legislation to be challenged in court, remove caps on the number of students that can be admitted to anglophone CEGEPs and remove restrictions on immigrants receiving government services in English, among other things. Fortin advocates for several measures to recruit and retain healthcare professionals in the Outaouais, which includes increasing the salary of nurses, offering them guaranteed daycare spots and ending mandatory overtime, among other things. Fortin also specifically pledged to advocate that anglophone students be allowed to attend École primaire Ste-Marie in Otter Lake, instead of being bused all the way to Shawville in order to both reduce pressure on the schools in Shawville and prevent needless long distance travel for families in Otter Lake.

Pontiac MNA André Fortin has announced that he will not run for leader of the Quebec Liberal Party.

“Tough decision, but I will not be running for the leadership of the Liberal Party of Québec. Tough, because I sincerely believe that my party needs leadership that can go above and beyond to orchestrate its rebuild,” wrote Fortin in a Facebook post on June 28.

“There comes a point in everybody’s life where you get to make decisions based on where you are in life,” said Fortin in a conversation with THE EQUITY. “And right now, I’ve got a very busy family life, I’ve got two little girls who need a dad.”

“I think there are lots of people who can probably take on this role, but there’s only one person who could be dad to those two little girls.”

Fortin was first elected as Pontiac MNA in 2014. He has held multiple positions including the Minister of Transportation before sitting in the offical oppostion.

Fortin was widely seen as a strong candidate for leader of the Quebec Party since Dominique Anglade stepped down last November after the provincial election.

“I didn’t set out when I started this to be the premier of the province or to be the leader of the party,” Fortin said. “I set out to represent the people here in the area. It’s the people who raised me, the people who gave me my values and the people who encouraged me to take on this role.”
