MRC Pontiac will be celebrating Quebec’s Culture Month beginning on Sept. 26 with a variety of free activities for residents across the region.
According to a Sept. 4 press release from the MRC, “the month-long celebration is a pilot project initiated by Hydro Quebec, who approached Culture Pour Tous with the mandate to offer funding to . . .
five MRC’s in the province of Quebec. The five MRC’s were chosen by Hydro to offer free cultural activities to the population of their territory. It is an opportunity for all artists, cultural workers and citizens of all origins to get together and unite to participate in the great revival of the cultural milieu.”
The month will be largely characterized by drive-in movie nights as well as a handful of artistic workshops.
The celebration will be kicked off with an ArtPontiac hosted-art fair called Souk’art outside the Stone School in Portage-du-Fort on Sept. 26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Later that night, the Municipality of Campbell’s Bay will be hosting a drive-in movie night near the RA building. Popcorn will be given to residents for free thanks to local councillor donations, and Frisson des collines (2011) will be shown at 7:30 p.m. before Dirty Dancing (1987) at 9:30.
Culture Month events will resume the next weekend with the Municipality of Otter Lake hosting a drive-in movie night on Oct. 3 at 7:30 p.m. outside the Raymond Johnson Community Centre. The municipality will first be showing Un été sans point ni coup sûr (2008) before Trolls World Tour (2020) at 9:30.
On Oct. 10, the Pontiac Agricultural Society will be hosting a drive-in movie night at the Shawville Fairgrounds. At 7:30 p.m., De Père en Flic (2009) will be played followed by an English film at 9:30 that has yet to be announced.
From Oct. 14-16, Christian Ferland, circus performer and cultural educator, will be hosting a performance workshop for youth through La Maison des Jeunes du Pontiac at their Shawville location.
The Municipality of Mansfield et Pontefract will be hosting their drive-in movie night on Oct. 17 at 7:30 p.m. outside of George Bryson House. The sole movie scheduled for the night is Gerry (2011).
The next weekend, on Oct. 24, the Municipality of L’Isle-aux-Allumettes will host the last drive-in movie night of the MRC’s celebration outside Harrington Hall. At 7:30 p.m., La légende de Sarila (2012) will be played.
Seniors living at CHSLD Pontiac will also benefit from the celebration of Culture Month, as songwriter Chantal Larivière will entertain them on Oct. 1 and 2 in performances that will be closed to the outside public.
