The Pontiac Senior Comets lost their fourth game of the season on Saturday night to the league-leading North Dundas Rockets.
This was the team’s first home game of the season at the Centre de loisirs des Draveurs in Fort Coulonge after a mechanical failure at that arena forced the team to play its first three home games in Shawville.
The hosts played the undefeated Rockets to a stymie until late in the first period, when the visitors scored two goals to give them a 2-0 lead at the first intermission.
The second period saw more action as the Comets scored two consecutive goals, levelling the score. The Rockets then shot back to notch three in a row, putting them ahead 5-2.
The Comets’ Darcy Findlay tallied a goal at the end of the second period, but the home team wouldn’t get a chance to complete the comeback. During the game’s second intermission, the zamboni broke the ice along the boards, leaving exposed cement underneath, so the referees called the game off.
“The ice was freshly done on Thursday and Friday and unfortunately it didn’t hold up. We needed a bit more time for the ice surface to be rock-solid,” said Comets co-owner Sébastien Bonnerot.
Bonnerot added the team could have played a make-up period before their next game against the Rockets, but he said they decided to take the forfeit loss.
“Because our rosters change so much, being that it’s senior hockey, I don’t think we’d be able to recreate the same two teams,” he said, adding his team performed well against the undefeated Rockets.
He noted that the team’s next game is on the road, giving the arena crew time to fix the ice.
“We have time to recover and make sure we patch things up at the rink and keep working on it. We should be okay,” he said.
In the abbreviated game, Comets forward Connor Romain recorded a goal and an assist, and was recognized as the second star of the game.
With the victory, the Mustangs remain undefeated this season with seven wins. The Comets have now won three games and lost four, placing them second in the Capital division.
The team is back on the road for its next game, travelling to Long Sault, Ont. to play the South Stormont Mustangs on Nov. 23. The Comets lost to the Mustangs on Oct. 27 by a score of 6-4.
