Family, friends and more descended upon the Coronation Hall Sunday afternoon, celebrating the lives of two pillars of the community with the sharing of stories and songs.
A few hundred visited the hall in Bristol, paying their respects to David and Rosaleen Dickson, with the latter having passed in January of this year.
The afternoon saw an event centered around an open mic, as guests were welcome to take the stage at any point to share an anecdote or strike up a chord. Their children shared stories of growing up, the importance of music to the family, and the welcoming nature of their parents.
Others shared stories of working jobs early in their careers, getting their start with the couple while working at The Equity.

Everyone shared, in one way or another, how the couple had impacted their path through life, especially while growing up in the Shawville area.
“I’m sure we each have our own stories, of how they just got something done through sheer determination and perseverance,” said Andrew Dickson, the youngest of their children, towards the beginning of the gathering.
“Hopefully some of you have some of these recollections to share with us this afternoon,” he continued.
David and Rosaleen purchased The Equity in 1953, moving to Shawville at the same time. In their lifetimes, they would contribute many positive additions to the town, Pontiac and Ottawa Valley. Whether it be growing and cultivating local media, pushing for social change or simply providing jobs for the budding youth, their time in the area is marked by many accomplishments.
Together, they raised six children, contributing to many more grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
David passed in 1992, while Rosaleen passed on Jan. 23 of this year. They rest at the family plot in Shawville.
