The Liberal government’s “Québec Branché” initiative and other announced projects were not ambitious enough and had no targets for cell coverage. Despite these programs, approximately 240,000 homes in Quebec still do not have access to quality internet service. Similarly, cellular coverage, still deficient in many parts of the country, is not specifically targeted by any of these measures.
It is unacceptable that at the dawn of the third decade of the 2000s, these Quebecers still do not have access to such an essential service. In his first term, the government of the CAQ will invest $400 million on four years to give access to all Quebec communities to a high speed internet connection and broadband cellular by 2022.
The remote and rural areas of Pontiac Riding will benefit from this CAQ initiative which aims to:
– Set a minimum download goal of 100 Mbps for the internet and an LTE (4G) speed for cellular coverage
– Favour projects originating from communities
– Work in partnerships with municipalities, MRCs and non-profit organizations to deploy high speed internet in the territory
– Ensure that the projects are carried out in complementarity with the coverage already present on parts of the territory
– Make sure that there are federal, community and internet provider investments to add to investment
