The Western Quebec Literacy Council (WQLC) hosted its first board game afternoon at the Brauwerk Hoffman brewery in Campbell’s Bay Saturday afternoon to encourage literacy skills in less conventional ways than simply reading a book.
“We’re not all suited to sit and read books to get our literary dose that way, so interacting with other people in a social environment is nice,” said WQLC president Nikki Buechler.
“It turns out there’s a whole bunch of really cool, inventive games that spark creativity through literacy. There are some that make stories out of cubes, a Poetry for Neanderthals one where you can only use one syllable, or classic ones like Boggle.”
The afternoon also featured a Boggle tournament with two winners taking home a gift card to Giant Tiger.
Buechler said that the WQLC will host board game afternoons the last Saturday of every month going forward and hopes the gatherings will draw out more young people.
