The Quyon Lions Club hosted its third monthly community breakfast on Sunday morning in the town’s community centre, a new tradition it started in November to raise money for the club.
From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., a steady stream of locals stopped by to fill their plates with steaming eggs, beans, sausages and bacon and share a meal with neighbours at one of the many tables set out for the event.
“We just started [the breakfast] as a trial run to see if it would work, and we’re having a pretty good turnout,” said club president Eric Provost, noting that without a local restaurant in Quyon anymore, the club decided it would try offering the community a regular place to get together for a meal.
“It’s something like having a church supper, where you see people you haven’t seen in a while. It’s a nice community event.”
Lions member Eddie McCann agreed.
“It’s important to have these community events. It helps the club develop connections and gives people a chance to meet and get together.”
He said each breakfast has a sponsor that helps the club cover the costs, Sunday’s sponsors being Dave Mayer and Monique Robert from Patinage en Foret in Wolf Lake. In attendance was the business’s mascot Loupie, who was keen to take photos and offer a hug to anyone who would take one.
McCann said the plan is to hold the breakfast the third Sunday of each month.
“We do not have a specific cause right now for fundraising but we do support numerous local initiatives. We have pledged to the arena renovation project and have donated to the Shawville Curling Club repairs. I do not have an exact tally from Sunday but we were pleased with the turnout.”
Provost said the club hopes to keep the breakfast going for months to come.
“If we’re still going, which I hope we are, by summertime, then I think our turnout will be even better.”
