A team of volunteers spread themselves across Bristol over the weekend to help roll out what was the municipality’s first spring clean-up event.
Volunteers were set up at stations in Norway Bay, Pontiac Station, Caldwell, and at Bristol town hall, where they handed out supplies to Bristol residents who were helping to clean up the municipality’s shared community spaces.
The two-day event was organized by members of the municipality’s newly formed Community Improvement and Beautification Committee, Connie Twolan, Emily Reid, Ken Bernard, Bonnie Beveridge and Nancy Crain, and was led by councillor Greg Graham.
“We’re looking for ways to make our municipality better, more beautiful and . . .
attractive,” Graham told THE EQUITY, noting this was just one of many beautification projects to come from the committee.
Nancy Crain and Wendy Prevost welcomed cottagers and volunteer cleanup crew Marta Monaghan and Ross Osborne to the Norway Bay station on Saturday morning, where they provided them with trash pickup sticks, gloves and bags before the two set off to do some cleanup work at the Murray Hill beach.
“We’ve got a bin there for the batteries, we put the electronics to the side in a separate pile, but furniture and things like that can go directly into the bins,” Crain explained, pointing to two large dumpster bins
behind her.
She said that for those who who were not able to get to a transfer station, the Bristol Fire Department was on standby to help.
“The intent is to encourage the community to participate not only in the cleanup of their own properties, but also our public spaces as well,”
Crain said.
