The Quyon Lions Club held its annual Pancake Supper last Tuesday evening at the Quyon Legion.
At least 100 people filled their plates with pancakes, ham, sausages and salad over the course of the evening’s feast, according to event organizer and Lions Club member, Hollie Leach.
“The pancakes are unlimited, we’ve got five guys cooking upstairs,” Leach said with a grin. “Pretty well all the Lions donate something, and then the money all goes back in some form to the community.”
Donna Kennedy and her husband Ellard were among the pancake enthusiasts on Tuesday evening.
“We were married 38 years this summer and we . . .
haven’t missed one [Pancake Supper],” Donna said.
Tracy Henderson-Huckabone attended the event with a friend.
“It’s nice to be here to support the community,” she said. “And it’s nice to not have to cook!”
When THE EQUITY asked Henderson-Huckabone if she was familiar with the significance of Shrove Tuesday, she said she had looked it up prior to attending the event.
“It’s the last big meal before you give something up for Lent,” she explained.
Shrove Tuesday, also known as Pancake Tuesday, falls each year on the day before Ash Wednesday in the Christian calendar.
Traditionally, people of Christian faith would go to church on Shrove Tuesday to confess their sins and be shriven (listened to and forgiven by a priest) before Lent would begin the following day.
While named for its religious significance, the day is generally marked by feasting and celebration, prior to, as Henderson-Huckabone indicated, the traditional fasting of Lent.
