Approximately 30 people gathered at the Otter Lake Memorial Park on Sunday to pay their respect and honour those who have fought for freedom and . . .
democracy in the First and the Second World Wars, The Gulf War, the Korean War and other peacekeeping missions.
As new mayor Terry Lafleur officiated the ceremony, poems were read in both French and English and wreaths were laid in memory of Willard Blanchfield, Arno Bretzlaff, Herbie Hearty, Raymond Johnston and Arsidas Lafleur as well as wreaths representing all levels of government, the Fire Department, Golden Age Club and the youth of the community.
“It’s important to honour this historic part of our community,” said Freddie Johnston who was there to pay tribute to both his uncle Raymond Johnston and his father-in-law Arno Bretzlaff.
“It’s nice to see a group of younger people out here as well,” said Anne Johnston Bériault. “It’s important for them to know and remember the sacrifices that were made.”
Rev. Fortunatus Rudakemwa led those gathered in prayer then proceeded to lay a wreath at the base of the monument. Councillor Robin Zacharias and several members of the Otter Lake Fire Department were also present.
Members of the public lined up as they were invited to pin poppies to a white cross to pay their respect at the end of the ceremony.
