For the 40th year in a row, locals laced up and took off for the Pontiac Terry Fox Run, traveling along roads and trails and engaging in other forms of exercise in support of “a dream as big as our country.”
Those who took part in the run, from youths to seniors, should be proud. Altogether – between the combined efforts of the virtual run, Pontiac High School’s run last week and Sunday’s official Pontiac Terry Fox Run – participants travelled a distance of 8,909 km. For reference, that’s approximately 97,430 football fields and a greater distance than the entirety of the Trans-Canada Highway.
What else can be said but a simple “wow.” What better way to honour an incredible Canadian hero like Terry Fox than with the incredible efforts of a community coming together to change the world for the better by raising money for cancer research. Praise is well-deserved by Rick Valin and John Petty, who have been organizing the run since only a year after Terry Fox began his journey.
Terry once said, “I want to set an example that will never be forgotten.” If you look at what took place here last week – and in the weeks leading up to it – then he did just that.
