Dear Editor,
In this letter (published on page 4, May 19 edition) it appears that some pertinent facts have been omitted. OAS (Old Age Security) was introduced in 1952, at which time life expectancy was . . .
68.8 years and which climbed to 81.9 in 2015. (This was why the previous government had changed the age eligibility from 65 to 67 to receive either OAS and GIS (Guaranteed Income Supplement) as needed.
The CRA (Canada Revenue Agency) has at it’s fingertips the exact numbers of seniors who are at (or above) the poverty line and who need additional financial support. This fact shows that $300.00 payment to all seniors was not needed, and that the $500.00 payment for seniors 75 and over in August 2021 is only a pre-election ploy.
All of these so-called “gifts” are being paid for with borrowed money by this government and the burden will be placed on every Canadian, now and for an unknown time to come.
I wonder how many of your readers know just how much money they owe due to this government.
I feel sorry for the upcoming generations due to the burden they will carry.
