The MRC des Collines Police released a press release on May 7, reminding users of off-road vehicles of the provincial Act Respecting Off-Highway Vehicles and its corresponding penalties.

According to police Spokesperson Sgt. Martin Fournel . . .

the use of off-road vehicles has become an increasingly popular activity, prompting the police force to issue the reminder.

The rule that generates the greatest volume of complaints is regarding the use of off-road vehicles on public roads. The release states that unless there is a federated trail and/or an area where a sign permits use, the fine is $350 plus fees.

Additional common penalties are for unregistered off-road vehicles, which is mandatory across the province, and for owners of vehicles without liability insurance. Unregistered vehicle drivers can be fined $300 plus fees, while uninsured drivers can be docked $250.

An off-road driver can also be fined for not wearing a helmet to the tune of $350 plus fees.

The release clarifies that it’s function is to summarize details of the act, but that it is the responsibility of off-road drivers to be fully informed.
