Dear Editor,
I’ve noticed lots of traffic on the back roads lately and I’ve also noticed a lot of discarded cans, mostly beer cans. Along a one kilometer stretch of road I picked up . . .
a black garbage bag of cans, plus a water bottle or two and one jumbo Tim Horton’s coffee cup.
I don’t have time to walk along the whole road every few days and I know you road runners are not likely to take your cans back to the store where you bought them, so I’ll ask that you do this one thing to make cleaning up after you a little easier. Drop your cans out the window of the vehicle gently, so that I or whomever is inclined to pick up litter can do that easily.
Don’t think that the cans disappear if you toss them into the ditch or beyond — they don’t. And most of all, don’t toss them into the swampy areas because it’s an extra burden on us, to get our feet wet retrieving thoughtless tourist litter.
