Dear readers, it is the beginning of a new reality for all of us. Covid-19 is a challenge that no one in our generation has ever experienced. Of course, infections have occurred many times throughout human history, but they mostly resulted in localized epidemics and not world-wide pandemics.
The difference is that we are living in a more mobile society. We can be halfway around the world in a matter of hours. Health professionals are telling us this is why covid-19 has spread so quickly.
So what is the answer to stopping this spread of a virus that can be so dangerous to our population?
Again, our health professionals are advising a number of reasonable precautions.
First and foremost we are told to observe a higher level of personal hygiene, hand washing following the instructions offered by World Health Organization. Also social distancing, which means that we are being told to avoid all unnecessary social contact. Of course, the elderly and those with existing health issues are most vulnerable to serious illness due to this virus.
So what can we do? In my experience this is the moment for us to pull together. Follow the advice of the medical experts and find new ways to reach out to our neighbours and friends. Praise the Lord, we have social media. For all of its problems, Facebook, Twitter, Messenger, etc. are a great way to stay in touch with our family and friends.
The last time I checked my telephone is working just fine. Most communities have access to cell phone services.
Family and friends are pulling together and the younger folks are offering to pick up groceries and medications for those who are being told to stay at home. So in spite of the need for isolation, our better angels are becoming more visible. It is not in times of plenty that we find our true heroes.
