Nearly 40 golf amateurs from the region convened at Mickey Creek Golf Club in Vinton on Saturday, for a relaxing day out on . . .
the course while raising money for a community organization.
Hosted by the Campbell’s Bay Royal Canadian Legion Branch 162, their annual golf tournament is one of the club’s most important fundraisers. Having taken place on a yearly basis since 1995, the event is crucial to the sustainability of their establishment, Legion President Ron Woodstock said.
“The Legion traditionally was a place to go and drink,” he said. “The bars made money. Well that doesn’t happen anymore. We’re only open officially one day per week, on Thursdays. So, we need to have other means of bringing in money.”
The event generally raises around $500, Woodstock said.
Featuring 36 golfers divided in nine foursomes, the tournament consisted of a nine-hole best ball format and judging by the skill level and attitudes of most participants, the atmosphere was quite relaxing and recreational.
After a long day of bunker shots, missed putts and bogeys, many participants headed over to the clubhouse for an awards ceremony accompanied with a delicious barbecue chicken dinner.
Organizers drew around 20 door prizes donated by various community organizations and businesses along with a few awards for individual achievements.
Winning the title for longest drive for males was Nicolas Durocher, while Cathy Amyotte won on the women’s side. Best putting was won by Kaiser Lavigne and Alexa Bowie respectively. Hitting the closest shots to the pin were Carl Keppes for the men and Dane Bowie for the ladies.
When it was all said and done, the winning team consisted of the course’s owner Jeff Presley, Claude Lacroix, Jerome Romain and Pierre Dumouchel who went home with a total of $350 in gift certificates from Lalonde’s Towing in Clarendon and Jer’s Auto in Ladysmith.
All in all, the tournament raised around $1,000 and was a substantial success, Woodstock said.
Along with all the sponsors who contributed to the event, Woodstock wanted to thank Oscar Beaudoin and Lori Kensley for lending extra hands to help coordinate the event.
