Pontiac Lion Midget A
The Midget A Lions participated in the Pontiac Provincial Tournament, our hometown tournament, over the weekend.
Games kicked off on Friday, with the Midget As taking to the ice against the Cobden Muskrat Voyageurs. It was a fast-paced game between two well matched teams.
The Lions started the scoring in the first period with a goal from Carson Rusenstrom on a pass from Evan Atkinson.
The Muskrat team took the lead in the second period until Connor Gilpin ripped one past the net minder to tie it up once again.
Going into the third period, the fans were on their feet. With around a minute left, Rusenstrom scored on a pass from Nick Curley putting the Lions in the lead with a score of 3-2. Too bad for the Lions, with a couple of seconds left in the game, the Muskrats were able to slide one in ending the game in a tie. Player of the game went to Rusenstrom.
On Saturday, in game two of the round robin portion, the Midget A Lions met up with the Hull Senateurs. Once again, the game kept the fans on their feet. Both teams were evenly matched with action moving up and down the ice.
Evan Atkinson opened the scoring on a pass from Cole Sheppard. The Voyageurs tied it up in the second. And in the third, Rusenstrom managed to net the game winning goal with help coming from Atkinson and Willis Egan. The final score was a 2-1 win for the Lions. Player of the game went to Atkinson.
Sunday morning had the Lions facing off against the Aylmer Vikings for their final round robin game. This one was an uneven match up with the Lions easily taking the win with an 8-0 victory. A 2-0-1 record in the tournament, placed the Midget A Lions in first place in their division. They would meet up with the second place team, the Hull Senateurs, in the final. Both teams knew it would be a tight game.
The puck dropped at 5 p.m. in front of packed stands for the home team.
The Lions started the scoring in the first period with a goal from Harry Lukacs-Hitz on a pass from Nick Curley. Hull tied it up in the second but before the buzzer to end the period sounded, Atkinson on a pass from Gilpin, scored.
Moving into the third period, the Lions were up 2-1. The visiting team managed to tie the game with 30 seconds left sending the game into overtime.
The winning goal came from Atkinson, ending the game with the Lions holding the championship banner.
Player of the game was handed to Jaden Stewart.
The Lions goalie, Kaelen Ireland, had a great weekend, only giving up six goals during the tournament.
Thanks to our fans for cheering us on.
