Pontiac Lions Midget A
The Midget A Lions participated in the Ottawa River Cup in Gatineau, Que. this past week. There were three midget divisions and the Lions were part of the Senators grouping along with teams from Vaughan, Ont., North Toronto, Ont., and Montreal, Que.
The first game was played against the Vaughan Rangers on Friday night. The Rangers kept our boys on their toes but they couldn’t quite overpower us. The Lions were victorious with a 2-0 win. Goals were scored by Evan Atkinson unassisted and Harry Lukacs-Hitz assisted by Atkinson and Hunter Lukacs-Hitz. Player of the game went to goalie, Kaelen Ireland.
On Saturday, the Lions faced off against North Toronto. This was a strong team that has played together for several years. The Lions were down two skaters on a big ice surface and came up short in the game. Toronto served up the Lions their first loss of the season.
The Lions lone goal was scored by Atkinson on an assist from Willis Egan. Player of the game went to Atkinson.
The Lions met the Montreal Cougars in their third game of the tournament. This game proved to be a comeback win and confidence builder for the Lions after their first loss earlier in the day. The Lions easily took the victory by a 7-1 score.
Goals went to Atkinson (4), Thomas Beck, Nick Curley, and Willis Egan. Players earning the assists went to Cole Sheppard (3), Atkinson, Egan, Curley, and both Hitz boys. Player of the game went to Atkinson.
The Lions 2-1-0 record after the round robin earned them a second place rank pitting them up against the first place North Toronto team in the final championship game which was a rematch from game two. The Lions knew what to expect and came out hard.
The unclassy Toronto rivals were caught off guard by the Lions grit and determination. Our home town boys showed up to win and certainly gave their opponents reason to worry.
First goal of the game went to the Lions as Evan Atkinson banked it past the goalie. Toronto followed back with two of their own. Going into the third period the Lions were down 2-1; with three minutes to go in the game. Atkinson fired on the net and the puck squeaked past the goalie tying up the game forcing a sudden death period of overtime. Fans were on the edge of their seats. Unfortunately, Toronto scored first ending a very good, tight game. Player of the game for the final was Jaden Stewart.
The Lions played with heart and didn’t fall for their rivals unsportsmanlike behaviour. They should be proud of their accomplishment and hard work over the weekend.
The next home games are on Dec. 15 against Aylmer Vikings at 4:30 p.m. and again on Dec. 16 against Loups Collines at 5:30 p.m.
