If residents of the MRC Pontiac hear a low-flying helicopter buzzing around their neighbourhoods, there’s no need to panic.
Mining company Osisko Metals Inc. will be performing an airborne magnetic survey as part of a zinc exploration.
The company is in the early stages of looking for deposits of zinc in the area to determine the viability of a mining operation.
The survey started on Nov. 15 and will continue through February of 2019.
In order to perform the survey, a three-member team will use a detection device mounted on a helicopter that will fly 30 metres above ground in order to search for zinc.
The survey’s territory includes swaths of land from the MRC des Collines as well as the MRC la Valée du Gatineau.
According to MRC Pontiac environmental coordinator, Kari Richardson, residents of Otter Lake spotted the helicopter on the morning of Nov. 24.
Richardson also said that Osisko has indicated that there is no risk of harm to residents, animals or the environment associated with the survey.
If zinc is found, Osisko will communicate with property owners in order to gain access to their property if they wish to pursue further mining exploration.
Representatives from Osisko did not respond to questions by press time.
