The Pontiac Senior Comets returned to home ice on Saturday, rounding out minor hockey day at the Fort Coulonge arena with a hard-fought game.
Though action was back and forth with the Mont Laurier Montagnards for most of the game, the third period saw the home team fall apart as their opponents outpaced them.
First period proved an early wake-up call for the Comets, when Montagnard Michael Mantha scored in the first three minutes of the game. Pushed into a corner, the Comets’ defences improved and neither team scored the rest of the period.
However, second period proved the big turning point for the Comets, after another goal by their opponents early on. Things started to look up when Johney Cormier and Guillaume Grégoire fired in two for the home team, tying up the scoreboard before the period was over.
Though the teams left the second tied, this period saw many penalties plague it. The Mont Laurier lads ended up with five, while the Comets received seven.
Many of these penalties resulted from a large fight 12 minutes in, in which four players from each team racked up a pile of penalties.
Coming off of this, the third proved the nail in the coffin for the Comets, as the Montagnards scored four more times. Pontiac’s Dylan Wisotzki would manage to fire in one more, but it wouldn’t be enough to redeem the team. The final score read 6-3 for Mont Laurier when the game wrapped up.
The Comets currently sit in third place on the leaderboards, having won four of their 10 games played.
Despite the loss, young Comets from the minor hockey day had the chance to enjoy some old-fashioned hockey, between the close action and fighting witnessed. In collaboration with the young players’ minor hockey day, any Comet in the league who showed up wearing their jersey received free entry to the game.
Next, the Senior Comets will meet the Montagnards once again on Saturday, playing an away game. Dec. 8 will see both teams return to Fort Coulonge, hitting the ice at 8 p.m.
