SHAWVILLE Nov. 10, 2018
The Maniwaki Mustangs served up a fast-paced game in Shawville on Saturday night, quickly outpacing the Coldwater Ice Wolves to rule the rink all night long as the Canadian Premier Junior Hockey League games returned.
Right from the get-go, the Mustangs put up a strong offense while blocking out their opponents, ensuring they’d smoothly skate to another win as they continue their recent winning streak.
Less than a minute in, Mustang Anthony Bédard scored the first goal, assisted by Carl Roy, to lead the team in the right direction. By the end of the period, the Mustangs would lead 5-0, with a goal from Adam Masty-Shem, another from Bédard, and two from Daymond Morrisseau.
The start of the second proved worrying, as the Ice Wolves came back with some bite. Head coach Samuel Rivet said it was at this point he had to have a serious talk with the lads, getting them back on track.
“I talked to the boys a bit there and told them to wake up because they weren’t skating anymore,” said Rivet.
They’d leave the second leading 5-2, before ramping up efforts in the third. Bédard continued to lead his team, firing two more past the Ice Wolves’ goalie, before Alex Visitor sunk the final nail in the coffin, with their eighth goal of the night.
Though the Coldwater team managed one more in the third, their ship was sunk as the Mustangs won 8-3. This proved the Maniwaki team’s seventh straight win since Oct. 25.
Rivet was proud of the boys’ efforts on the ice, especially as they cleaned up their act in terms of penalties as the game went on. The night saw three injuries mark the Mustangs’ bench, but he was proud to say the team kept up the fight no problem.
As well, he noted that while their offensive line has proven spectacular, goalie Louis Wery is deserving of much credit for his skills, too.
“Our goalie was pretty strong, he kept us in the game in the second there,” said Rivet.
The Maniwaki Mustangs will return to Shawville on Sunday, Dec. 2 for a game against the Smiths Falls Settlers, starting at 4 p.m.
