Luskville’s community-based Groupe Action Jeunesse made good on its objective of organizing activities for the Pontiac’s young people on Friday by joining with allies in hosting a talent show evening at the Luskville Community Centre.

It’s a good thing that the community centre shares a parking lot with the town hall, the fire department and the road maintenance crew, as all of that space was required, and more. There is no such thing as sold out for an event where admission is free, however, if there was, this event would . . .

have been oversold and by some margin.

While the invitation was for a talent show, the evening unfolded more like a celebratory birthday party for a Walt Disney character of only the wildest popularity. Every corner of the community centre was full to overflowing with children, their parents, their grandparents and even their great-grandparents. This event had no age restriction and there was plenty of appeal for all.

In one corner was the canteen, managed by the graduating grade six class committee of École de la Vallée-des-Voyageurs (Notre-Dame-de-la-Joie location) as a fundraiser for their graduation activities. In another, a large screen hosted by the municipality offered information on upcoming municipal consultations. There was a huge popcorn machine offering bags of goodies while colourfully-costumed mascots strolled about, and there were very popular activity tables full of crayons and books. Local outfit Cool Canvas, better known for their successful Paint Nights, offered drawing services while Nina’s Decals was on hand offering prizes and caterer “ouichef” provided sandwiches and fruit to supplement the canteen.

And most of all, there was joy. There was community joy – in a jam-packed room full of people who answered the call for the first such evening since covid came into the picture.

Sylviana Geoffray, president of Groupe Action Jeunesse Luskville, was ecstatic with the turnout. “Wow wow wow – what a memorable evening, and we are thrilled that it has exceeded our expectations,” she glowed.

A donation from the Knights of Columbus in Hull helped with the canteen and one from the Quyon Community Association helped bring Kayser Magic to stage to the delight of all.

The rest was provided by an energized and activated group of entertainers. There were pianists and martial artists, dancers and hoola-hoop experts, group shows and individual ones, visual artists and interpretive. Of particular delight was a presentation by the Bambinos Universe Early Childhood Center where a large group of miniature dancers brought 1974’s Kung Fu Fighting to life with choreographed dance and exuberance.

With a robust gathering on and off stage, they are already planning for 2025.
