What a crazy, wonderful holiday I’m having in BC. I’m helping my sister Norma, downsize and pack for her next move. She bought a property in Midway (which is right beside the U.S. border ) and is moving from Rosedale. It is a five hour drive east of Chilliwack, BC. We left Friday morning and headed east towards Hope, then onto Hwy. 3, through Manning Provincial park, Hedley, Osoyoos (the warmest place in Canada), Rock Creek and to Midway. I saw a moose on the way there.
I’ve never been on Hwy. 3 before and it was just as thrilling as being on the Trans Canada Hwy. going through Kicking Horse Pass when I drove through there 25 years ago. Of course my nerves were better then and I was up to the challenge. Norma was driving her travel van and pulling a 12 foot trailer behind her loaded. I was scared breathless every time we headed downhill. You should have seen the views with the mesmerizing mountains and the death defying valleys and gorges.
We zigged and we zagged across every mountain range until we reached our destination. I nearly wore out the floorboard on the passenger side and I was white knuckled most of the way.
We offloaded the contents of the trailer in Midway in her garage but the house is not there yet so we went ahead to Greenwood. Now Greenwood is known to be the smallest city in Canada. It is small but actually a real city. Check it out. We stayed at Barb and Margo Eaton’s home there.
I couldn’t get over the antiques they have in their house. Everywhere I looked there were little treasures I’ve never seen before. They were so hospitable.
Saturday, we all went to the Rock Creek Fall Fair where we got to see panning for gold, got to do axe throwing, saw the Scottish bag pipers, Can-can dancers and tons of exhibits. They even had chicken catching races for the little ones. Whoever caught a bird got to take it home.
The children had another race where they had to place a ribbon on a live goat’s tail. The goat was being held by his owner with a 10 foot rope so it wasn’t as easy as you think. There must have been 60 children who entered and every one of them got a prize
The 4-H club girls showed the crowd how to catch their horse and go bareback. Then they demonstrated how quickly they could saddle their horses, mount it and lassoo a calf. They even showed us how to corral 10 cows and get them into a cattle trailer without touching, talking, or spooking the cows. They just kept making their outside circle smaller and smaller until the cows had nowhere to go but inside the trailer.
Then we were treated to a fantastc equestrian and acrobatic show. We got to see a wonderful performance put on by three very talented young ladies.
But the race that everyone comes here to see is the lawn mower races. There are different categories just like stock car racing. It was very exciting and funny watching them throw dirt on the spectators and each other. There were wipe outs and breakdowns and even an accident but no one was hurt. Then they had the powder puff races. It was great entertainment and loads of laughs.
Sunday, we headed back to Rosedale and I had another nail biting, breath stopping and heart skipping trip. I told Norma that this was better than any roller coaster ride. She laughed at me the whole trip.
This week she wants me to make pies and I don’t know what all else. I will keep you posted.
