I’ve been busy the last couple of weeks crafting and baking and now I’m preparing the house for . . .

Christmas. I put up my tree last night but I still have the decorations to put up.

We are lucky to not have any bad weather so far this winter or should I say this fall because winter really doesn’t officially start until Dec. 21. The problem is the ground is still not frozen and that’s never good before the first snowfall.

I would like to wish the following people a very happy belated birthday: Claudette Stanton, Roger Pilon, Simon Baxter, and Corben Davidson all on Dec. 12, Ruth Hearty on Dec. 13, James Crawford and Randy Sloan on Dec. 14, Nancy Bertrand, Jennifer McGuire, Marie Josée Corriveau, Jamie Hearty all on Dec. 15, Norma Boisvert, Kate Ranger, and Patricia Kensley on Dec. 16.

Just a quick reminder, I’m making my meat pies and turkey pot pies now so please place your order to guarantee delivery before Christmas.

I see there’s a new road going into Campbell’s Bay from the Fort Coulonge side and the old road has been blocked off. There are a ton of markers there to guide you so please be aware of the change. There is also a new reduced speed limit of 70 km/hour for that two mile stretch past Campbell’s Bay. It’s for everyone’s safety.

Just when we were beginning to think that it was going to be a green Christmas, then all hell breaks loose. It was pouring rain all day and then it turned into a very wet sticky snow. Great for making snowmen but that’s all. It snowed like that all night but the real problem came with the dropping temperature. That turned the snow into giant ice cones which clung to every tiny little branch and the poor branches started sagging finally snapping under all that weight.

My power went out on Saturday and on Monday I still did not have power. Thankfully I have a wood stove but some of my neighbours don’t. Bobby Ostrum came up from Shawville to bring Dennis Hearty and I water and anything else we needed. Hydro was supposed to be back on during the night but that didn’t happen. So Bobby said he’d bring a generator Monday to keep my freezers cold. I’m so thankful for his help.

On the brighter side to this story, it was such a beautiful sight with the trees covered in snow. Then the moon came out and really showed the majestic scenery with the snow glistening in the moonlight. It was actually breathtaking to see. A real Hallmark picture. Too bad I don’t have a good camera to capture these moments. It’s almost bittersweet, hardship and devastation on one hand but total awesomeness on the other.

Just up on the highway my neighbours have power. They have it on the Ridge Rd. and all around. Just seems to be all of Church Road and some of the Bank Road here in Vinton. Otter Lake, Thorne, Kazabazua and so many other areas are affected too.

My Aunt Betty Mayhew and Gilbert Sparling had to go to Quyon to Gilbert’s daughter Susan because they do not have heat. This should be a state of emergency. People’s water pipes are going to freeze and ruin their homes. Most of them are elderly and unable to start the generators even if they have one.

God bless you all and keep you safe.
