On Monday morning, in front of family, supporters and staff, Jane Toller was sworn in as Pontiac’s first elected warden in the Elsie Gibbons room at the MRC office in Campbell’s Bay.
“It is my hope that we will all work together towards a more prosperous Pontiac,” she said. “I am very aware of the responsibility that has been given to me and embrace it, to serve the people of the Pontiac.”
She follows in the footsteps of her great-great-grandfather, George Bryson Sr., who represented the county in 1862, as well as the Pontiac’s first female warden, Elsie Gibbons, who was elected in 1959.
“I’m excited to begin this important work and I’m very confident that the next four years will be marked by accomplishment which will improve the quality of life for our people who live here,” she said, thanking those that helped her campaign.
She said her first order of business to start the week would be a meeting with Pontiac MNA André Fortin to discuss local files. She also made the rounds at the MRC office to acquaint herself with the staff and answer any questions they might have.
On Tuesday morning, Toller and the 18 local mayors gathered at the office of Pontiac MP Will Amos for a breakfast get-together before their first council meeting.
She said that there would be changes to the MRC in the coming weeks. The public council meetings that are held on the third Tuesday of every month will be moved from the morning to the evening, in order to allow those with day jobs to attend.
“This is something that the people of the Pontiac asked for and it’s a way of us being more transparent,” she explained.
