Students and staff at St. John’s Elementary in Campbell’s Bay participated in the school’s annual Terry Fox run on Friday morning (Sept. 12).
In what was at least the school’s twenty-fifth annual run according to principal Lorianne Bertrand, Grade 5 and 6 students followed a route along the PPJ trail while the rest of the grades went around the school’s bus circle.
Bertrand said the Terry Fox run is a tradition the school has been doing for at least 25 years because it is an opportunity to teach kids about an important Canadian figure while also getting some exercise.

“Terry Fox is a positive role model that the kids can look up to, and say, ‘I’m doing it like Terry,’” said Bertrand. “And exercise is important.”
Students were encouraged to don stickers with the name of the person they were running for. Some chose to run for Terry Fox himself, while others chose family members who were touched by cancer.
Bertrand said the students were shown an educational video on Fox’s story before the run, and she created trivia questions to test their knowledge on the man and his Marathon of Hope.
“It’s so they get to know who Terry Fox was,” she said, adding that the school raised $1,081.60 for the Terry Fox Foundation.
