On Saturday night, dozens of people turned out to the TCRA hall in Ladysmith for a spaghetti dinner in support of the Pontiac Legion.
Organizer and president of the Ladysmith Recreation Committee Terri-Lyn Blaskie explained that they had sold around 55 tickets for the dinner, though there were people just showing up for the music and dancing.
She said that while their committee has five members, they got lots of help from some Oktoberfest volunteers, who donated the meatballs and some desserts for the evening, in addition to helping out in the kitchen.
Blaskie said that while there are ceremonies throughout the region on the actual day, they wanted to do more.
“We wanted to host a spaghetti dinner but then we thought, Remembrance Day’s coming up, why not do it for that?” she said, explaining that the group would be donating the proceeds of the 50/50 draw (won by Candi Greer Kalter) and the bar tips to the Legion, which totalled $250.
In addition, she said there was a table display where attendees were invited to put pictures of loved ones who have served or are currently serving in the Canadian military.
“My grandpa was military, [as was] my brother, so we did ask people to bring pictures so there’s a table of that,” she said “We just thought it would be a nice way to contribute.”
Entertainment for the evening was provided by Danny Sylvester and Kyle Pallen.
Door prizes donated by Bretzlaff’s store were won by Kathy Peck and Robert Blaskie.
