On Saturday at the Upper Pontiac Sports Complex Arena in Chapeau, a volunteer dinner was held in honour of a special couple, Henry and Joan Sallafranque. Two hundred and fifty family members and friends turned out to thank this special couple for a lifetime of volunteering and dedication to their community. At 90, Henry is still working and helping out with all the younger volunteers. They realize there is much to be learned from an old boy who has been around the block a few times. Also, compliments to Patrick Fleming who was the emcee and to all the volunteers who organized this event.
The third annual Amphibious Challenge was a great success in Sheenboro again this year. Thirty-seven teams participated with 11 teams doing the 40 km long course. This race included the short course plus running up the mountain and swimming across Trout Lake, back down the Mountain Road to Sullivan Road, climbing up Donato mountain (also known by its original name as Jennings mountain), swimming across the small lake at the top and then returning to Fort William via the Darcy and Butler Lines and Sarah’s Road. It was a fun day for all.
I mentioned earlier about the volunteers who drive all these events in our communities. Well, on Saturday in Sheen for the Amphibious Challenge there were lots of volunteers including our young gal, Laetitia Peacock, who also attended the dinner for Henry and Joan Sallafranque. Volunteers like these will be very hard to replace.
Our family enjoyed a nice get-together at Deep River, Ont. with our grandson Wyatt who is home from Grand Prairie, AB. Thank you to our daughter-in-law Sonya who prepared a nice dinner to feed this hungry bunch. After dinner Wyatt showed us a slide show and gave us some info on working in the oil fields.
We also got to spend some time with our step-granddaughter Jessica and her husband Shane of Ottawa. They attended a wedding at Northfork for her friend Erin Leigh Tennian of Petawawa, Ont. who married Andrew Kenneth Howat.
Pontiac West Fire Services were very busy last week with two house fires. Luckily no one was hurt. Small animals are cute but they can do a lot of damage if they get in your attic, such as chewing on electric wires.
