The Shawville Curling Club closed another successful season last week, with a banquet dinner for the daytime curlers on Thursday, season finals and a supper for the competitive league on Saturday, and a Fish and Game Bonspiel open to anybody on Sunday.
Dalton Cluff, member of the club’s daytime curling committee, was proud to report about 60 people attended the dinner, which was cooked by Joey Smith, chef at the Little Red Wagon winery.
Cluff said the club has seen fewer daytime curlers, formerly referred to as senior curlers, since the COVID-19 pandemic.
One change to the scheduled ice time this year – moving the Monday daytime curlers from 10 a.m. to noon – has meant more farmers were able to partake.
“They do their chores in the morning, come and curl at lunch, and then go back home in the afternoon,” Cluff said. “We made the change after the first draw this year and went from four teams up to six.”
The Monday men’s daytime curlers league was won by skip Gary Harris, third Joey Smith, second Wade Ellison, and lead Rick Younge.
The Tuesday mixed league was won by third Peter Haughton, second Laurie Barber, lead Joey Smith, and skip Bert Murphy.
The Thursday mixed league was won by lead June Smith, second Dalton Cluff, skip Bert Murphy, and third Peter Haughton.
The competitive league also celebrated the end of the season with its final games and a steak supper on Saturday evening.
Team Brett won the Steve Allen Trophy as the regular season winners, with skip Brett MacKechnie, second Amanda McLaughlin, lead Justine Tanguay and third Andrew Rowat.
Team Hayes took the K&L Trophy for winning the C Division, with second Gerry Ireland, third Steve Ethier, lead Parnell Pachal and skip Greg Hayes.
Team Bolo won the Pontiac Ice Trophy in the B division, with third Andrew Simms, lead Caleb Nickerson, second Tim Powell and skip Wade Ellison.
Team Palmer took the Art Kilgour Trophy for winning the A division with third Jerry Hannaberry, lead Troy Griffin and skip Joey Hannaberry and second Tim Palmer.
On Sunday, the Fish and Game Bonspiel returned to the club after a several-year hiatus. It was organized in memory of Bruce Hodgins who hosted it for many years.
The winning team included second Scott Campbell, third Dalton Cluff, skip Travis Kluke and lead Sam Hayes.
