Congratulations to Dannah (Draper) and Brandon Nugent on the arrival of their baby girl, Penelope Kathleen. She was born on Sept. 3, and she is a little sister for Charlotte. Her excited grandparents are Mary-Sheila Keon, John Draper, and Paul and Sandra Nugent. Wishing the whole family all the best with their sweet little girl.
Our deepest sympathies to the family of Dianne Leach, as she passed away on Sept. 5 at the age of 68. Having grown up with Dianne’s daughters, I have many great memories of sleepovers at their house when we were kids. It was always a fun place to be, and Dianne treated us so well. As an adult, I enjoyed running into her out and about and having a chat. Above all, Dianne loved her family, and her grandchildren brought her so much joy. Our thoughts and prayers are with Glen, Hollie, Vicky, and all of the family and Dianne’s many friends. She will be so dearly missed.
On Saturday, the Quyon Community Association hosted Community Day, and despite Mother Nature’s attempts to ruin it, those of us who braved the rain, wind, and cold, had a fantastic time. The circus-themed games for children in the park were a big hit, as well as Stacy Johnston and Maddy Belland providing face-painting. A nice crowd gathered in the afternoon, as Eddie McCann kicked off the day by emceeing the event, and we were all treated to Rolly Bernier and the gang performing, as well as Lorne Brady and friends. The Town Pants then hit the stage to provide some rowdy Irish music that kept the toes tapping. The roast beef dinner served by the Quyon Lions Club was excellent, and the hall was full of guests there to enjoy the delicious meal.
Following a break to enjoy dinner, we returned outside to hear Amber Prudhomme perform a solo set, and she was amazing. The evening of music carried on with Rick King putting on a great show, and then followed by Arnold Trudeau and Larry Chevrier who kept us warm by providing great dancing tunes. Unfortunately, Gail Gavan was unable to attend at the last minute, but the entertainment all day was absolutely wonderful, and a special thanks to Arnold and Larry for being the house band and providing the equipment and sound for the day.
The QCA also featured “The Wall of Wonderful”, where you could buy tickets and if one of the tickets you selected matched up with a prize, you were the lucky winner of that prize. It was very popular throughout the day, and a big thanks to all of the local businesses and individuals who made donations towards the prizes. The QCA also had a great team of volunteers who helped to set up on Friday, and then helped by tending bar, selling tickets for prizes, and much more throughout the day, for which they were very grateful. The weather wasn’t great, but that Quyon Community spirit shone through to make it a terrific event.
Meanwhile, over at the ball diamonds, Quyon Sports & Rec were hosting their annual 3-pitch fundraising tournament. They powered through downpours on Friday evening to get the tournament started, and then played through less than favourable conditions on Saturday as well. The big winners were the Fighting Irish, and the winner of the 50/50 was Ryan Murdock.
The QSR also hosted Cow Pie Bingo, and Annabelle the cow was transported to the rink by Bonnieshade Farm. Fortunately, this year she actually did “make a pie”! The lucky winner of $1,000 was Laura Stewart. Kudos to Quyon Sports & Rec for carrying on through less than ideal conditions and making a great weekend out of it.
Birthday wishes are going out to Donna Kennedy on Sept. 11, and to Cassandra McKay on the 14th. Blessings to all celebrating special occasions this week.
