I hope everyone enjoyed Canada Day weekend and kept cool and hydrated. It was a scorcher! In Quyon, we celebrated a day early, on June 30. The Canada Day Committee hosted a wonderful day of events in honour of our country’s birthday. We enjoyed their delicious BBQ that was held at the Quyon Legion and the children were entertained by Little Ray’s Reptiles, as well as games and fun provided by animators from the Quyon Family Centre. The parade was held that evening and it was great to see so many decked out in red and white, especially on such a hot day. The committee marched at the end of the parade following the tradition of carrying the giant Maple Leaf to the flag pole by the Ferry for the annual flag raising ceremony. Mitchel Trudeau greeted the crowd on behalf of the Canada Day Committee, and our MP Will Amos, MNA André Fortin, Mayor Joanne Labadie and Councillor Sue McKay were all in attendance. Natasha Curley led the crowd in the singing of “O Canada” as the giant flag was raised. The fireworks at dusk by the Ottawa River were a spectacular show, the highlight of the day, drawing many oohs and ahhs from the huge crowd gathered. A celebration followed at the Quyon Legion, with Maestro Joe DJing. Big thanks to the Canada Day Committee for all their hard work and dedication in putting on these festivities for our community. It was wonderful!
On July 1, our family gathered at the river in Sand Point for a
nother fabulous celebration at the Drapers’. We had a great visit with our relatives who had joined us from Oakville for the weekend, my aunt and uncle Linda and Paul Lucas, cousin Paula and her husband Jory and their children Ryla and Brody. We beat the heat by playing in the water, enjoying a delicious pig roast for dinner and watching the fireworks from all around go off at dusk. All of the little cousins had a great day playing together. Thank you to Aunt Marion and Uncle Eric for hosting us for the day, we had a terrific time.
Despite the heat over the weekend the fairground in Quyon was packed with campers and the wonderful performers at the Quyon JamFest still took the stage to the delight of the crowds. They had a great turnout and everyone enjoyed good ol’ country music all weekend long. Kudos to the organizers for putting on this much-anticipated event in our community.
Happy 60th birthday to Ray Johnston, as he celebrated on July 1. We also have birthday wishes going out to Alvin and Calvin Johnston on July 6 and to Everett Hamilton on July 9. Happy Anniversary to Karen and Brett Stanley, as they celebrated on July 1. Best wishes to everyone celebrating this week.
As I`ve mentioned before, I am playing in the Quyon 3-pitch league this year with the Lollygaggers. I must give a big shout-out to my team because we had a pretty big game last week. Anyone who has seen us play knows that we aren`t going to win any games this year. But last week we had a couple of double-plays. We almost got five runs in one inning and Joe Bennett hit our first two homers of the season. Sure, we still lost, but we considered it a victory in that we got to play the sixth inning before getting mercied. It was an epic night for the Lollygaggers. Way to go team!
The Quyon Flyers played to a good crowd last Thursday evening, with the Stittsville 56ers in town. Quyon had another win, taking them 5-2 and solidifying their place on top of the GOFL standings. Stittsville will be in Quyon again July 5 for the re-match. Game time is 8 p.m. Go Flyers!
